Destiny USA Advances Solar Energy Plan

Touted as one of the world’s most sustainable project, Destiny USA, a 75-million square foot retail, hotel, and entertainment complex currently under construction announced yesterday a plan to develop and build up to 3.2 megawatts (MW) of solar generating capacity within the Destiny USA site. The plan is a partnership with Hereford Capital Advisors.

The photovoltaic (PV) array will be in the form of covered parking located on either side of Solar Street covering over 20 acres. The company says that it will be the largest solar installation in New York State and the fifth largest installation in the country. The company also says that the installation will represent over 25% of New York’s current solar deployment.

“A couple of weeks ago, we released our commitment to secure green power for Carousel Center effective this month,” said Robert J. Congel, Founder and Chairman of Destiny USA. “Today’s announcement is another step forward in our journey to operate free of fossil fuels with on-site power generation. Going forward Destiny USA will continue to serve as a living laboratory for renewable energy products.”

The solar carports will provide 12% of the electrical needs for the 1.3 million square foot expansion to Carousel Center. According to the company, when fully operational, Destiny USA would like to operate 100% free of fossil fuels.
