Clean Energy Groups and an Indie Rock Band Team up for Nonprofit Homeboy Industries

Solar nonprofit and indie rock band join forces to fight crime in Los Angeles: sounds like a movie plot. But this month, clean energy groups Everybody Solar and GRID Alternatives and the band Trapdoor Social have teamed up to help Homeboy Industries, a nonprofit which stops recidivism among former gang members, to go solar. The band is donating all the proceeds from their album’s presale to fund this unique and socially responsible project through the online crowdfunding site Pledge Music.

“This is a great opportunity to marry fundraising and the music world for solar energy,” says Youness Scally, Executive Director of Everybody Solar. “Everybody Solar’s mission is to protect the environment and strengthen US communities through solar energy projects.”

This partnership will benefit Homeboy Industries by allowing them to direct funds previously needed for their utility bill towards providing job-training, education and mental health services.

“Our goal is to use our band as a vessel for communication and to convey the urgency of environmental responsibility,” noted lead singers of Trapdoor Social Merritt Graves and Skylar Funk.

Everybody Solar and Trapdoor Social have already raised about a quarter of their $20,000 goal for this project. The project is still being designed but is expected to have a capacity of between 5kW to 10kW. The group currently pays over $500 a month on their electric bill so this project will save them thousands of dollars a year.

In another twist, GRID Alternatives Greater Los Angeles, will lead a team of volunteers and job trainees to install the project. Typically, GRID focuses on installing projects on low-income homes, and this project will be one of their first commercial projects.

The Sierra Club has also agreed to promote the fundraising effort and project through its My Generation Campaign which works to bring clean energy to low income neighborhoods and communities of color.

The promotion is live now and donors will receive Trapdoor Social’s music and a number of other perks offered by the band. All funds raised through www.pledgemusic.com will enable Homeboy Industries to benefit from clean energy and reallocate the energy savings from solar to their actual causes.
