Topeka, Kansas [RenewableEnergyAccess.com] The public is invited to observe a demonstration in Topeka, Kansas, on how to install home-based photovoltaic (PV) rooftop solar power. The installation of the 1.8-kilowatt (kW) Uni-Solar thin-film laminate PV metal roof, designed for home-based rooftop solar power, will commence on Friday, April 28, 2006, at 8 a.m. Uni-Solar trainers will attend, and volunteer electricians and roofers are needed to assist with the installation.Uni-Solar’s thin unbreakable PV laminates are made from stainless steel rather than glass and are bonded directly to standing seam metal roofing. When the roofing is installed, the laminate produces electric power. This new type of solar roofing, which is said to be less obtrusive than traditional solar electric panels, is being used on residential projects in many areas. This type of home-based PV rooftop solar power is more competitive, creating business opportunities for electricians and roofers, and provides a way for homeowners to obtain their energy from renewable sources, especially in light of rising prices for oil and gas. To encourage homeowners to install solar power, some states are offering rebates of up to 60%. The new federal energy bill also grants an income tax credit of up the 30% of a photovoltaic project’s costs. Uni-Solar’s Director of Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV), Steve Heckeroth, will be on hand to direct the installation and training in Topeka.
