Asian Photovoltaic Industry Association names leader from Suntech

Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (NYSE:STP) CEO and founder, Dr. Zhengrong Shi, will take the helm as the first 2-yr-term Chief Chairman of the Asian Photovoltaic Industry Association (APVIA).

(NYSE:STP) CEO and founder, Dr. Zhengrong Shi, will take the helm as the first 2-yr-term Chief Chairman of the Asian Photovoltaic Industry Association (APVIA). Dr. Shi was chosen by the photovoltaics companies, industry associations, and research institutes that make up APVIA membership.

Zhengrong Shi is also on SEMI’s International Board of Directors.

Asia is “uniquely positioned” to lead the PV industry’s global growth, said Dr. Shi, noting that leading photovoltaics companies have their headquarters in Asia, with manufacturing and R&D, as well as solar industry resources, available in the region.

APVIA is tasked with bringing the best technologies, economies of scale, and market opportunities to the PV ecosystem, Shi continued. APVIA will promote the advancement of the Asian PV industry, enhance public-private sector communication on industry policies, create a favorable investment environment to help market expansion, and establish a platform to nurture innovation and technology in the region. The business scope of the association covers information and academic exchange, technical consultation, project demonstration, quality standards, market service, education and training. The nonprofit association comprises 670 photovoltaic enterprises, 23 industry associations and 15 research institutions.

The founding ceremony of APVIA was held in Singapore on October 31, 2011 during International Energy Week, an annual platform for energy professionals, policymakers and commentators. The group was approved by Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA) of Singapore in January 2009.
