San Antonio utility CPS Energy is mourning the death of a veteran lineman who was electrocuted on Tuesday.

CPS Energy confirmed the death of Clayton Kloesel, 32, who had spent the past 11 years working for the utility. In a statement, CPS Energy described Kloesel as a “skilled journeyman” and an active member of the utility’s lineman rodeo team. He leaves behind his wife and three sons.

“This sudden loss is felt throughout our organization,” a CPS Energy spokesperson said.

A GoFundMe account has already raised more than $63,000 to support Kloesel’s family. A friend of Kloesel said he was the family’s primary provider, “and his sudden loss has left them in a challenging situation.”

The funds will be used to cover funeral expenses, as well as the ongoing financial needs of Kloesel’s family, the organizer said.

Local police said Kloesel was on a utility pole when a power line experienced a surge. The crew members who joined Kloesel for the power restoration effort reportedly thought the line had been de-energized.

Police said an investigation into Kloesel’s death is underway.

According to the San Antonio Report, CPS Energy last suffered an on-the-job death in 2013, when a 31-year utility veteran fell during a training exercise.

There were 1,322 workplace deaths involving electricity between 2011 and 2022, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. That makes electrical work one of the most dangerous jobs in the U.S. Nearly half of those deaths occurred while working on or near energized wires or parts, while 41% were linked to contact with overhead power lines.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our beloved Brother,” the union representing CPS electrical workers said in a statement. “(Kloesel) will be remembered for his dedication, hard work, and the camaraderie he brought to our union family.”
