UL Solutions has announced a new field-testing program for medium voltage cables. The program is designed to help cable manufacturers and utilities avoid cable system failures by evaluating the performance of cable systems and identifying installation or service aging defects.
The program includes condition assessments and commissioning tests, such as withstand and monitored withstand tests, partial discharge diagnosis, dielectric loss measurement and neutral corrosion evaluation. These tests can help identify potential issues with cable systems before they cause failures.
Medium voltage cable system failures can have a significant impact on utilities and the businesses they serve. They can lead to loss of revenue and production, as well as additional damage caused by the failure. A variety of factors can compromise the quality of a cable system, including cables, connectors, joints, and terminations.
UL says it has more than 30 years of experience in medium voltage cable systems and that UL experts participate in developing testing standards and serve as leaders on international technical committees dedicated to medium voltage cable systems.
The new field-testing program is the latest offering from UL Solutions in the energy and utilities sector. The company’s capabilities and expertise in this sector help customers develop cables and cable accessories with a focus on safety, quality, and performance.
