Grid edge software provider Sense and Sensus, a manufacturer of advanced meters, are developing what they believe would be the first electric smart meter capable of capturing and processing 1 MHz data in North America.

The companies said the new smart meter technology will allow electric utilities to “process almost one billion times the amount of data currently available in the 15-minute interval data from first-generation smart meters,” according to Sense CEO Mike Phillips.

Sensus said the product is still in development and did not share a go-to-market date.

Smart meters, or advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), account for more than 80% of electric meters installed in North America, according to analysis from Berg Insight. Sensus, a subsidiary of Xylem, captures 8% of the North American smart meter market, Berg said.

Berg Insight states that in the next two years, first-generation projects by utilities such as AEP, PSEG, Xcel Energy, First Energy, PPL, Dominion Energy, National Grid, Ameren, Avangrid, Exelon and AES will contribute to annual first-generation smart electricity meter shipments ranging from 5 to 7 million units. However, the first-generation smart meter shipments will account for an increasingly smaller share of the annual shipment volumes as the second-generation deployments are forecast to account for more than 80% of the yearly shipments by 2029.

According to the study, the yearly shipments of smart electricity meters in North America will peak at 18.5 million in 2024 and gradually decline to 14.9 million units by 2029.
