Consolidated Edison picks Omnetric Group, Siemens for meter data management platform

Con Edison Co. of New York and Orange & Rockland Utilities, both regulated operating companies of Consolidated Edison, have contracted with Omnetric Group, a smart grid solution provider and Siemens and Accenture joint venture, to implement Siemens EnergyIP.

The project will support the utilities’ advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) project for more than 3.9 million electric and 1.3 million gas customers.

Con Edison and O&R have selected Omnetric Group on the basis of its extensive knowledge of the Siemens EnergyIP product, as well as thought leadership around the execution of advanced metering projects.

“Consolidated Edison, Inc. was in need of a robust, market-leading smart grid platform to support their innovative advanced metering project, as well as an implementation partner” said Wade Malcolm, CEO Omnetric Group, Americas. “With more than 50 experts in the US with an average 5+ years’ experience with Siemens EnergyIP, the Omnetric Group team will bring deployment expertise and systems integration know-how to the project. Omnetric Group will work with the utilities to assist them in extending integration of the Siemens technology to their operational and customer facing solutions, helping to meet their requirements today and in the future.”

Pioneering utilities, such as Con Edison and O&R, are implementing programs that will help empower customers, improve efficiency, and benefit the environment. Selection of Siemens EnergyIP as their meter data management platform enables the utilities to meet the challenges of mass market advanced metering, as well as underpinning the integration and analysis of resulting data into actionable insight. This project supports the transition to frameworks of the future, such as those articulated in New York’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) strategy.

“We’re thrilled to extend our technology partnership with Con Edison and together with Omnetric Group, bring industry-leading technology and integration expertise to meet the performance and functionality needs of this ambitious AMI deployment,” said Mike Carlson, president of Siemens Digital Grid. “EnergyIP will help Con Edison and O&R achieve the agility to support a significant meter rollout while advancing a strategic smart data strategy with advanced analytics and grid optimization.”

Siemens EnergyIP is the industry’s leading scalable meter data management platform with the most large-scale deployments in the utility industry. The technology is designed to handle the complexity of a multi-million point AMI deployment, operates in real-time for fastest possible decision making and improved efficiencies, and can integrate with any number of utility enterprise systems.

The New York State Public Service Commission recently approved Con Edison’s plans to begin deploying the AMI communications system and smart meters starting in 2017.
