A newly installed automation system is set to improve the way the California Independent System Operator Corp. (California ISO) relays information between its control centers and power generation plants to ensure power delivery to consumers. The Remote Intelligent Gateway (RIG) system from Hathaway Corp. will interface the California ISO’s two control centers to generators at five California plants where the system has been installed as part of a pilot project. The system provides a secure network for the transport of real-time operational and meter data from the generator sites to the control centers and enables the California ISO to directly control the power generators in the five pilot sites. This enables the ISO to measure and control the amount of electricity that generators put into the transmission system.
Hathaway has begun receiving orders from owners of participating California power generators to install the RIG systems, which sell for $38,000 to $102,000 per site, depending on each site’s size and technical requirements. “We have worked closely with the California ISO to develop the technology that will meet their needs for the future,” said Dick Smith, Hathaway Corp. president and CEO. “This represents a significant opportunity for Hathaway to achieve its goal of being a major supplier of information technology systems to the evolving world power market.”
