A nuclear power reactor in Pennsylvania is back on line after a planned maintenance outage that lasted less than a week, the plant’s operators said this weekend.
Talen Energy’s Susquehanna nuclear plant Unit 1 resumed power generation for the grid on Friday, only six days after it was taken offline for proactive maintenance work. Susquehanna’s Unit 2 remained in operation at full power throughout the outage.
“Susquehanna’s maintenance professionals completed proactive maintenance actions to restore redundancy to a major piece of equipment. These actions help ensure reliability and predictability of our generation equipment,” said Brad Berryman, Site Vice President, in a statement.
The Susquehanna plant, located about seven miles north of Berwick, is owned jointly by Susquehanna Nuclear, LLC and Allegheny Electric Cooperative, Inc. and is operated by Susquehanna Nuclear. Susquehanna Nuclear LLC is one of Talen Energy’s generating affiliates.
Unit 1 has been in operation since 1983 and delivers about 1,257 MW. Unit 2, which has the same power capacity, was commissioned two years later.
Both units have GE reactors. PPL Corp. owned the plant until it spun off its competititve energy business to create Talen Energy in 2015.
