Linemen were working around the clock this week in Florida to restore power for customers still in the dark after Hurricane Milton, but one lineman made a difference in an unexpected way.
PowerLine lineman Cameron Elias was working under Bird Electric to conduct restoration work this past Sunday when he noticed the aftermath of a car crash while he was leaving the highway in Wauchula, Florida, according to Peace River Electric Cooperative (PRECO), which shared the news on Facebook via Daniel Moore, PRECO Coordinator of Safety & Facilities.
One of the vehicles involved in the crash was overturned, and bystanders were trying to retrieve the vehicle’s two occupants, who were stuck inside. Elias then parked in the median and made his way over to start trying to puncture the windshield. He first tried a trailer hitch provided by a bystander with no luck. Next, he was able to kick a small hole in the windshield with his work boots, which he then enlarged with his hands while wearing work gloves.
Elias received a small laceration on his arm during the incident, the post said, but he also works as an EMT. He bandaged himself and shrugged off any additional treatment, choosing instead to check on the vehicle’s occupants after they were extracted from the veicle.
“Cameron should be commended for his quick response and awareness in helping our community not only by helping restore power to those impacted by Hurricane Milton, but going above and beyond in responding to this traffic accident as well,” PRECO’s Facebook post said.
