Portland, Ore., September 11, 2001 – This is a status report from the Bonneville Power Administration.
The Northwest power system is operating normally. No threats have been received. Given the events of this morning, BPA is taking special steps to protect its employees and to assure the continuing reliability of the Northwest’s transmission grid. BPA has taken the following precautions:
* BPA has evacuated all but essential personnel from federal facilities it operates.
* BPA has canceled planned maintenance outages on the transmission system. It is running all operable transmission facilities to provide additional flexibility.
* All BPA maintenance crews are on duty and are standing by to respond to any event that might occur.
The federal Bonneville Power Administration markets roughly half the electricity supply for the Pacific Northwest. It sells power from 30 Northwest federal dams and one nuclear plant to Northwest utilities and operates more than 15,000 miles of high-voltage transmission lines, about three-fourths of the region’s transmission grid.
