Voith has been awarded a US$90.16 million contract to provide extensive modernizations of Serbia’s Zvornik hydropower project that will see the plant’s output capacity increase from 96 MW to 124 MW.
The order was placed by utility Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) and includes four generators, four Kaplan turbines, automation systems and mechanical and electrical ancillary equipment.
“Voith supplied two turbines to Zvornik back when the plant was built 50 years ago,” said Dr. Leopold Heninger, managing director of the company’s plant in St. Polten, Austria. “We are very pleased that we have once more gained the trust of Elektroprivreda Srbije to support the modernization project.”
Voith said the overhaul will not only improve performance and efficiency, but also reduce long-term maintenance costs.
HydroWorld.com reported that EPS and Norwegian power company Statkraft began preliminary work on the Zvornik rehabilitation in June 2006.
