Weatherization and the efficient use of electric appliances are two avenues that help reduce electric bills for homes and businesses. A tighter home coupled with energy efficient heating, cooling, washing machines, and refrigeration uses less electricity. But these upgrades cost money and the state of Maryland seeks to help low-to-moderate income (LMI) households access these upgrades by providing new grants for this segment of the population.
The Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) announced on September 22 the Fiscal Year 2023 (FY23) Low-to-Moderate Income Energy Efficiency Grant Program (LMI Program). Available to nonprofit organizations and local governments – on a competitive basis – the program is designed to provide cost-effective energy efficiency upgrades to homes and buildings that serve Maryland’s low and moderate income residents. This program also provides more efficient homes and buildings that will lower utility bills, while also promoting healthier indoor air environments.
“Improving energy efficiency while reducing costs are the pillars of this program,” said Dr. Mary Beth Tung, Director of the Maryland Energy Administration. “We are excited to partner with community nonprofits and local governments to help those most in need.”
The LMI Program budget for FY23 is $16.5 million an increase of $2.2 million over last year – to be allocated across Maryland.
