A startup is trying to predict and prevent outages before they occur

Everyone loves a good restoration story after power is knocked out, but one company is working to ensure that utilities have the information they need to predict and prevent outages before they occur, by detecting and isolating faulty equipment.

Toumetis, a participant in this year’s DTECH Initiate program, leverages predictive analytics and machine learning to reduce power outages and improve grid reliability in the electrical distribution industry.

Toumetis’ software platform, Cascadence, analyzes power quality data to predict outages before they happen, allowing utilities to convert long, unexpected outages into short, scheduled maintenance events. This can enhance reliability metrics, boost customer satisfaction, reduce operational costs, and help mitigate safety hazards like wildfire risks.

Cascadence detects when an anomalous power quality event occurs, correlates power quality events to device types and specific causes, and then determines the position of the failing equipment. The Cascadence data pipeline can be custom-built to support the requirements of any chosen power quality monitoring device. Live data is fed to Toumetis’ machine learning algorithms which have been trained to pick out precursors to equipment failure. Precursors are classified by equipment type, then the location of the device is determined before the results are displayed in a purpose-built, customizable dashboard.

“Toumetis is already making an impact—our deployment with San Diego Gas & Electric has successfully predicted and prevented dozens of outages,” said Kieran Bowen, director of product at Toumetis. “With a fully automated, field-proven solution, any utility can quickly launch a pilot and start seeing measurable benefits. As the industry faces increasing pressure to improve resilience and efficiency, Toumetis provides a game-changing approach that utilities can’t afford to ignore.”

PA Consulting, Toumetis, and San Diego Gas & Electric co-developed iPredict, an AI system meant to prevent power outages by predicting asset failures weeks in advance. By showing which assets are likely to fail within the next two weeks, iPredict lets utilities plan repairs and safely fix issues before a power outage. This allows a utility to reduce customer outages, reduce overhead and maintenance costs, and improve public and employee safety.

Additionally, last year, Toumetis was selected in Iberdrola’s startup challenge “underground cable monitoring,” thanks to its advanced and non-invasive approach to monitoring underground power lines. Iberdrola’s PERSEO Startups Program was meant to find solutions that enable the early detection of incidents in underground cables (with particular attention to cable joints) through an advanced and non-intrusive condition monitoring approach, with the aim of enabling proactive asset management and reducing the impact of incidents on supply and on customers.

At DTECH, Toumetis employees are looking forward to showing off their work to industry peers and stakeholders who could learn about or benefit from the company’s solution.

“I’m excited to showcase real-world examples of predictive analytics in action to an audience that has likely heard about its potential but probably hasn’t seen it fully realized,” Bowen said. “With a fully automated and deployment-ready solution, we believe many industry professionals will be surprised at how mature and impactful our technology already is. Initiate provides a unique opportunity for us to share our success stories, connect with key decision-makers, and demonstrate how AI-driven insights are already transforming grid reliability today.”
