FPL Energy announces TXU and Kinder Morgan to build gas pipelines to new power plant in Forney, Texas

JUNO BEACH, Fla., Oct. 2, 2001 – FPL Energy, LLC., today announced its plans to work with two gas pipeline companies – TXU and Kinder Morgan – to bring clean natural gas to Kaufman County to fuel its gas-fired plant, which is expected to become operational mid-2003.

Both gas pipeline companies will construct pipelines connecting to existing facilities.

Kinder Morgan North Texas Pipeline (KMNTP) LLC, a subsidiary of Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, will construct a pipeline from an interconnect in Lamar County to FPL Energy’s existing 1,000-megawatt power plant in Paris and its 1,789-megawatt plant in Forney, currently under construction. The Houston-based company will construct an 85-mile, 30-inch pipeline from Lamar County to Kaufman County.

KMNTP will finalize the new pipeline’s route in a manner that will minimize environmental and public impact and, wherever possible, follow existing linear facilities such as power lines, highways and railroads. KMNTP expects to begin construction next summer in order to meet the start-up of the Forney plant mid-2003.

TXU Lone Star Pipeline will construct a two-mile, 24-inch diameter pipeline from its existing gas transmission system in eastern Dallas County to the Forney plant. TXU will replace a smaller, existing pipeline in an existing pipeline right-of-way to minimize impact to the environment and expedite completion of the replacement pipeline. It expects to begin construction during Spring 2002.

“FPL Energy is pleased to work with TXU and Kinder Morgan, two of the largest energy companies in the nation, to bring this clean fuel to our plant in Forney,” said Mike McBurney, fuels director for FPL Energy. “Both have outstanding records of performance and are well experienced in siting, building and safely operating these facilities.”

Stephen Goff, FPL Energy project development director, said, “Contracting with two gas transporters provides our company much flexibility and helps ensure FPL Energy can provide competitively priced power for the people of North Texas.”
