AEP Retail Energy seeks certification to offer services to Texas customers

AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 9, 2001 – AEP Retail Energy(SM), an affiliate of American Electric Power, is seeking approval to provide energy supply services to large commercial and industrial customers in Texas beginning Jan. 1, 2002.

In a recent filing with the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT), AEP Retail Energy requested statewide certification as a retail electric provider. The PUCT is expected to take action within two to three months.

“AEP Retail Energy is exploring ways to build strong retail partnerships with large commercial and industrial customers across Texas,” said Andy Patterson, AEP’s senior vice president of retail energy services. “Customers are uncertain about the impact of deregulation and are looking to maintain a relationship with a provider delivering reliable service and price security. AEP Retail Energy can do just that.

“AEP Retail Energy staff has expertise in the functions important to large commercial and industrial customers, such as energy procurement, energy trading, load research and customer service,” he said. “These capabilities, coupled with our understanding of Texas customers’ unique needs, make us a viable choice for those who need an experienced, trustworthy energy supply partner.”

AEP Retail Energy representatives currently are contacting large commercial and industrial customers of AEP subsidiaries Central Power and Light Co., West Texas Utilities and Southwestern Electric Power Co., as well as similar customers throughout Texas.

AEP Retail Energy plans to offer competitive pricing and supply options and related services to meet the individual needs of these customer groups. “Most importantly, we will take the time to help educate customers to ensure that they are fully aware of their options and make sound decisions about their energy supply in this dynamic new market,” said Patterson.
