SolarEdge shrinks power optimizer size, improves chipset

SolarEdge Technologies will debut next-gen power optimizers at Intersolar Europe. The optimizers combine module-level maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and monitoring, a new ASIC chipset, and 32% fewer parts than prior iterations.

May 25, 2011 – BUSINESS WIRE — SolarEdge Technologies Inc., solar power optimization product provider, will debut next-gen power optimizers at Intersolar Europe, June 8-10 in Munich.

The new SolarEdge power optimizers claim 99.5% efficiency (98.8% EU weighted efficiency). These help solar panels produce up to 25% more energy in residential, commercial and large-scale PV systems. The optimizers combine module-level maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and monitoring, a new ASIC chipset, and 32% fewer parts than prior iterations. These factors make the optimizers 40% smaller as well.

The per-module MPPT algorithm dynamically tracks the global maximum operating point for PV modules and inverter, independent of mismatch or partial shading.

SolarEdge’s SafeDC features include automatic electric arc detection and termination and automatic module shutdown following inverter or grid shutdown. Like prior generations, the optimizers use a fixed string-voltage design. SolarEdge’s inverters (3kW, 3.5kW, 4kW, 5kW and 6kW single phase inverters, and 7kW, 8kW, 9kW, 10kW and 12.5kW three phase inverters) are designed to work with power optimizers.

SolarEdge Technologies Inc. has an almost 70% share of the optimizer market, according to analyst firm IHS iSuppli (Feb 2011).

SolarEdge will also have its string monitoring combiner box with internal disconnect per string and automatic ground fault detection and interruption (GFDI) at Intersolar. The combiner box promises safety, performance monitoring, and control for commercial and large-scale PV sites. Up to 64 individual string disconnects isolate ground-leaking strings automatically, and the system is controlled and monitored locally and remotely, without interfering with the performance of other strings or the solar inverter.

Visit the SolarEdge booth at Intersolar Europe: Hall B4, booth 310. Guy Sella, Chairman & CEO, will speak at the “Balance of Systems” session, June 8, 4-6pm. Lior Handelsman, VP Product Strategy and Business Development, will give a daily lecture at the Innovation forum at 11:30am.
