Hafslund Produksjon has awarded an order to Voith to provide equipment for extension of the 215-MW Vamma hydropower plant.
The company will supply and install a vertical Kaplan turbine, a generator, and the associated control system and switchgear. The turbine will have a capacity of 129 MW and the generator output of 150 MVa. This new Unit 12 is expected to be commissioned in spring 2019 and will be housed in a separate powerhouse.
Vamma is the biggest run-of-river power plant in Norway, according to a Voith press release. “The planned machine is quite unique as it belongs to the largest Kaplan machines in northern Europe,” says Frode Moen, chief executive officer of Voith Hydro Norway. “It will produce around 1,000 GWh per year and replace some of the 100 year old machines.”
After this upgrade, the Vamma plant on the Glomma River will produce 220 GWh more electricity annually. The plant originally began generating power in 1915.
Hafslund owns and operates eight power plants with combined capacity of 560 MW and total average annual power production of 3,100 GWh.
