Manitoba Hydro has extended the deadline for bids from general civil contractors to build the 200-MW Wuskwatim hydroelectric project on Manitoba’s Burntwood River. The new due date is July 17.
Manitoba Hydro is developing Wuskwatim in partnership with Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation. (HNN 2/6/07) The powerhouse is to be built at Taskinigahp Falls, 40 kilometers southeast of Nelson House. The project is expected to inundate less than a square kilometer.
The contractor is to provide supervision, labor, materials, plant, tools, equipment, and transportation. The province-owned utility expects construction of the C$1.2 billion (US$1.07 billion) project to take six years.
Preliminary construction started in 2006, with work on an access road to the powerhouse site. The first two years of activity is to focus on infrastructure, including clearing of the construction site, erection of a power line to bring electricity to the site, and development of a camp for construction workers.
