Canadian utility Manitoba Hydro has extended the deadline for bids to remove and dispose of stators and coils from three generating units of the 1,220-MW Kettle hydroelectric project on Manitoba’s Nelson River. Bids now are due Sept. 3.
Manitoba Hydro previously called for bids by Aug. 21.
The second-largest hydro plant in the province, Kettle was commissioned in the early 1970s and is undergoing a gradual rehabilitation and modernization project intended to extend its life.
Voith Hydro won a contract in 2014 to replace stator frames, supply pole re-insulation services, and provide new cores, windings and coolers for three 120-MVa generating units at Kettle. Manitoba Hydro took bids Aug. 7 for dam safety reviews of Kettle and two other projects on the Nelson.
The utility now seeks bids for: removal and containment of copper stator coils and all other components containing asbestos insulation from the stators of Units 1-3; salvage and sale of copper stator coils; disassembly, cutting, removal and cleanup of stator cores and frames; and sale of scrap metal. The work is to require 26 months.
