Volta River Authority (VRA) of Ghana invites expressions of interest by April 28 from consultants to develop a generation strategy study for the 912-MW Akosombo and 160-MW Kpong hydroelectric projects on the Volta River.
VRA is a government-owned utility, generating most of its power from the two hydro projects. It also is developing the 400-MW Bui project on the Black Volta River.
Employing a credit from the World Bank, VRA seeks to develop an operational strategy for the hydro projects within the West African Power Pool. The strategy is to ensure secure and reliable delivery of power and energy to the power pool at least cost, without compromising national electricity supply security. VRA staff also is to be trained in implementing the strategy.
Issues to be considered include: mode of operating Akosombo and Kpong in the short and long terms to optimize hydro generation; unit combination and generation scheduling of hydro and thermal facilities to achieve targets and minimize costs; effects of fuel costs, capital costs for thermal facilities, thermal plant availability, and thermal plant life. The work is expected to take six months.
