Canadian utility BC Hydro seeks bids for maintenance and upgrades to two overhead gantry cranes needed for a 1,000-MW expansion of the 1,085-MW Mica hydroelectric project on the Columbia River in British Columbia. A site visit is scheduled Oct. 17 with bids due Oct. 25.
BC Hydro began construction in 2011 to add two 500-MW units to the existing Mica Dam at a cost of C$1 billion (US$965 million). It took bids last year to design and supply motor control centers for the expansion.
Andritz Hydro is supplying the two Francis turbine-generators. Peter Kiewit Infrastructure Co. received a contract in 2011 for civil work needed to install the units. The utility also bought two turbine hall cranes and a construction crane from Konecranes America for the project.
BC Hydro now seeks maintenance and equipment upgrades to facilitate a safe lift of the generator rotors for Mica’s new Units 5 and 6. Work is to include replacement of hoist ropes, renewal of all bolts in connection between the main crane and beams, and removal of the power shoe system for replacement by a new shoe system to be supplied by BC Hydro. The contractor also is to modify the switchgear building crane platform to increase the clearance to the SF6 bus.
