Construction has begun on the Selset small hydroelectric project in England’s Tees Valley, developers announced.
RWE npower renewables recently signed an agreement with Northumbrian Water to develop the 750-KW hydro project at Northumbrian Water’s Selset Reservoir in Northeast England.
Work on the US$4 million Selset hydropower project will require integration with the existing water supply operations, improvements on an access road and construction of a powerhouse, Northumbrian Water and RWE reported.
The project will generate enough electricity to meet the average annual needs of about 1,000 households, and the power generated will be fed into the national grid.
The project will add to Northumbrian Water’s hydro plant at Kielder Water, Northern Europe’s largest man-made reservoir, which is also operated in partnership with RWE npower renewables.
Construction is expected to take around 12 months to complete, with the project operational in 2011.
