Afghanistan’s electricity authority seeks bids for construction of the 500-kW Baharak and 500-kW Topchi small hydro projects in Afghanistan. Bids are due November 4.
The Asian Development Bank approved a US$570 million energy sector investment program for Afghanistan in 2008, including funding for mini-hydropower projects in rural areas of Badakhshan and Bamyan provinces. Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (Afghanistan Electricity Authority) (DABS) recruited consultants in 2009 for work including developing Baharak, then estimated at 2.1 MW, on the Warduj River in Badakhshan. A consultant’s report recommended building Baharak at a cost of US$23.8 million.
DABS now seeks bids for construction of Baharak as Lot 1 and Topchi as Lot 2, including intakes, weirs, headrace canals, forebays, penstocks, powerhouses, steel works, and supply and installation of electro-mechanical equipment. Bids may be submitted for one or both lots.
