The government of Peru has begun courting potential bidders for a US$106.5 million rural electrification program that includes assistance to small hydropower.
The World Bank approved a US$50 million loan and a US$10 million Global Environment Facility (GEF) grant for the program, which is to be implemented over five years by Peru’s Ministry of Energy and Mines.
The program has five main components. Sub-projects could include isolated rural electricity systems supplied by small hydropower.
One part of the program is to use the GEF funds to leverage private financing for development of small hydroelectric plants that can sell power to Peru’s grid. It would provide a bridge to finance the plants during construction and initial operation. After initial risks have passed, loans would be refinanced through commercial banks.
The government anticipates tendering for all aspects of the rural electrification program, including 100 works projects valued at US$98 million, goods valued at US$1 million, and consulting services valued at US$7.5 million.
