MISO has projected adequate power reserves to meet 2019 summer peak demand. The regional transmission organization expects summer demand to peak at 125 GW, with 149 GW of available capacity.
The system’s summer peak demand forecast was reviewed during the April 23 Summer Readiness Workshop, a part of MISO’s reliability planning efforts.
“MISO is projecting adequate resources to meet the 2019 summer peak demand forecast and our reserve margin requirement barring atypical outages,” said MISO President, Clair Moeller. “We continue to work with load-serving entities, states and local jurisdictions to ensure readiness in all operating conditions.”
Overall decreases in coal resources along with increases in demand-response, behind-the-meter generation, wind and solar resources have led to a higher base reserve margin for 2019 of 19.3 percent.
MISO’s seasonal assessments review projected demand and resources for the MISO footprint and assess resource adequacy and risks for upcoming seasons. Several projected demand and resource scenarios are showing the need for Load Modifying Resources, indicating that MISO will likely need to utilize Max Generation procedures for this summer.
The current weather outlook indicates a warmer-than-normal summer for much of the mid-continent region. MISO noted that sustained high temperatures can have an impact on day-to-day operations. The RTO plans extensively to prepare for emergency operations that help maintain bulk electric system reliability.
The RTO holds regular summer readiness drills with members, market participants and MISO operators to review emergency operating procedures and test communication protocols. All MISO stakeholders can participate in the summer readiness workshop to understand how the region prepares for potential extreme weather conditions.
