Edison, Italy’s second biggest electricity producer, announced it will bid in a competition to build hydroelectric plants in Macedonia having a combined capacity of 500 MW.
“We have qualified for an auction in Macedonia,” Chief Executive Umberto Quadrino told a news conference on Edison’s 2006 results.
Quadrino said he was interested in expanding in the Balkans and other areas around the Mediterranean.
“All of the Balkans is interesting because there are initiatives for renewables,” he said.
The Macedonia projects were not identified. However, Macedonia has been actively auctioning hydro sites, recently offering 60 small concessions of up to 5 MW each currently open for bids. (HNN 2/16/07)
Late last year, the Macedonia government invited applications for pre-qualification to develop two hydro projects on the Crna River totaling just over 500 MW, 333-MW Cebren and 193.5-MW Galiste. That build-own-operate-transfer concession also included the right to operate the existing 92-MW Tikves hydroelectric project.
