Brazilian environment regulator Ibama has issued an installation license for the 1,800-MW Teles Pires hydropower project, wire services reported.
The license authorizes construction at the plant site. An operation license will be required and issued once construction is finished, Business News Americas reported.
Teles Pires hydro project will be built in the center-western state of Mato Grosso and is due to come online in 2015.
The Companhia Hidreletrica Teles Pires consortium will carry out the project. Local utility Neoenergia (50.1 percent), state-run firms Eletrobras Furnas (24.5 percent), Eletrobras Eletrosul (24.5 percent) and local engineering company Odebrecht (0.9 percent) make up the group.
