Guinea state-owned utility Electricite de Guinee (EDG) invites expressions of interest from consultants to perform a social and environmental assessment of the 75-MW Garafiri hydroelectric project and the 140.5-MW Tombo thermal power plant. Responses are due August 16.
The World Bank’s International Development Association awarded a grant in 2012 to Guinea’s electricity sector efficiency improvement program, Projet d’Amelioration de l’Efficacite du Secteur de l’Electricite (PAESE), which includes funding for the studies. The PAESE program seeks to improve Guinea’s generating facilities including hydroelectric production equipment for Garafiri, which was built in 1999.
EDG took bids in February for spare parts to the water intake, turbine-generators, substation, and transformers at Garafiri on Guinea’s Konkoure River.
The utility now seeks consultants to perform an environmental and social audit of Garafiri and the fuel-oil-fired Tombo plant. In 65 person-days, consultants are to examine likely effects of the plants, including waste, atmospheric emissions, hazardous products, sound emission, fire risks, evacuation plans, environmental and social impacts, and mitigation.
