A fire hit the warehouse of Brazil’s 11.233-GW Belo Monte hydroelectric project on Monday, according to a statement from state electricity firm Eletrobras.
BNamericas reported Feb. 12 that Norte Energia, which operates the plant, said there were no victims, but for safety measures all workers were removed from the area.
State-run news agency Agencia Brasil reported more than 20 firefighters worked for almost six hours to stop the blaze.
The fire department is reported to be waiting for a formal request from the building consortium to start investigations into the accident.
The plant, on the Xingu River in Para State, is Latin America’s largest power generation project. It has been under construction since 2011 and likely will not be complete until 2020 at the earliest.
The Norte Energia consortium includes Eletrobras, Eletronorte and Chesf. Other investors are Neoenergia, Petros, Funcef, Light, J Malucelli Energia, Vale and Sinobras.
