Uganda’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development invites applications from consultants to serve as project manager for construction of the 600-MW Karuma hydroelectric project on the Victoria Nile River. Responses are due November 4.
The ministry said it is still in the process of selecting an engineering-procurement-construction contractor to begin construction of Karuma in early 2012 at Karuma Falls. The project is to include an underground powerhouse containing five turbine-generators and a nine-kilometer tailrace tunnel running through nearby Murchison Falls National Park.
The ministry seeks a project manager to assist Uganda Electricity Generation Co. Ltd., the entity in charge of monitoring project implementation. The project manager is to help monitor activities of both consultants and contractors and to serve as liaison to Uganda Electricity Transmission Co. Ltd. to ensure timely completion, under separate contract, of a 400-kilovolt transmission from Karuma to Kawanda and a 132-kV line from Karuma to Lira.
The work is expected to require three years.
