The Bureau of Reclamation plans to seek bids for dam safety excavation work at Utah’s 4.5-MW Echo Dam.
A solicitation is expected to be issued in June with bids due about July 8.
Reclamation awarded a $1.3 million contract in May to Foothill Engineering and Dewatering Inc. of California to dewater the work site to enable excavation for the dam safety work. The agency said it would drill and install numerous dewatering and observation wells at Echo Dam on Utah’s Weber River, 42 miles southeast of Ogden.
Echo Dam is a 158-foot-tall zoned earthfill structure that was constructed between 1927 and 1931 as part of the Weber River Project to help supply supplemental irrigation water to 109,000 acres west of the Wasatch Mountains. The dam is operated by the Weber River Water Users Association.
In a set-aside for Historically Underutilized Business Zone (HUBZone) small businesses, Reclamation now seeks excavation downstream to replace potentially liquefiable materials in the dam foundation with stronger and denser material. Work is to include construction of a deep excavation shear key to bedrock near the downstream toe of the dam, while the project remains in operation. The contractor also is to remove and replace a toe drain system and backfill deep excavation.
The work is valued at between $10 million and $25 million and is to be completed by December 2013.
