The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers invites expressions of interest from firms to develop plans and specifications for construction of fish passage at the Corps’ Mud Mountain Dam, a flood control structure on Washington’s White River. Responses are due Feb. 17.
Mud Mountain was completed in 1948 to protect the lower White and Puyallup valleys by holding back water from heavy rains and snow melt then releasing it slowly into the river. Between flood events, the reservoir is usually empty except for normal flows of the White River.
Fish passage is to be constructed at Mud Mountain Dam in accordance with a 2014 biological opinion issued by the National Marine Fisheries Service that expressed concern about effects of the project’s operations on species listed under the Endangered Species Act.
The Corps’ Seattle District seeks architect-engineering services to develop plans and specifications ready for advertising a construction contract valued at $50 million to $100 million in about 18 months. Fish passage designs must include 95 percent fish attraction into the facility and 98 percent survival through the facility to release.
