Production at Nepal’s 60-MW Kulekhani 1 hydropower project has been cut in half following a short circuit in a cable, HydroWorld.com has learned.
The project — located on the Kulekhani River — is the only reservoir-type hydroelectric plant in the country, according to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), which owns and operates the project.
Kulekhani 1 is intended to provide additional power during times of peak and emergency situations, though NEA said recent rainfall in the area should allow other run-of-river facilities to keep pace with demand.
NEA told sources in Nepal that repairs will take about a week, though a more permanent replacement cable should be installed as soon as possible. That process, NEA said, might take months.
