Canadian utility BC Hydro seeks bids to perform dam safety reviews of three dams in its British Columbia hydropower system. Bids are due May 6.
BC Hydro recently recruited an independent engineer to oversee safety work at the 126-MW John Hart hydropower plant. An annual dam safety report for British Columbia found five dam incidents in 2011 that required action.
Now the utility seeks bids for dam safety review services for three dams including Coquitlam Dam on the Coquitlam River, which supplies water to the 26.7-MW Buntzen 2 hydroelectric plant. BC Hydro completed a seismic upgrade to the project in 2008 that included construction of a backup dam immediately downstream of Coquitlam Dam.
The solicitation also includes dam safety reviews of Sugar Lake Dam and Wilsey Dam on the Shuswap River, which store water for the 10.4-MW Shuswap Falls hydroelectric plant.
Firms may submit proposals to provide the services for any or all of the dams.
