The Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) seeks expressions of interest from consultants to help develop a master plan for sustainable development of the Uruguay River watershed in Brazil. Responses are due June 11.
IADB approved US$1.2 million to help finance the master plan in 2006. (HNN 8/30/06) The total US$2.7 million program is intended to improve management by Brazil’s Santa Catarina State and Rio Grande do Sul State of the region’s economic development to ensure economic opportunities and water and natural resources protection.
The basin is considered important for its hydroelectric potential, including the proposed 2,700-MW Garabi project, and agro-industrial development.
The technical cooperation funding was provided by the Japanese Trust Fund at the IADB. The bank seeks a Japanese consulting firm to carry out the work.
The firm is to include specialists in watershed management, finance, geographic information systems, natural resources economics, desertification, water pollution control, and implementation programming.
