Chart’s new LNG metering system provides accurate, repeatable low volume measurements

The Woodlands, TX, April 29, 2004 — Chart announces the statutory sealing of its Weights and Measures certified dispensers for public access LNG systems.

The dispensers, utilizing Chart’s patented technology for repeatable metering, were tested and approved by the regulatory authorities in California for metering Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) used in public custody transfer.

“This is the only dispenser in the world sufficiently accurate to consistently measure the small volumes of LNG used to fuel vehicles,” stated Tom Drube, Chief Engineer for Chart Fueling Systems. “It is also the only dispenser certified for legal custody transfer of product in California as well as the rest of the U.S.A.”

Chart began working on certified dispenser development four years ago and installed the test and certification prototype at the Waste Management, Inc LNG station in El Cajon, CA.

The metering system contains patented technology and proprietary algorithms to meter LNG for custody transfer. The system contains a solid state metering unit, with no moving parts, for minimum wear and maximum life and is designed to measure flow, temperature and composition of the fluid being transferred. The dispenser can be used as part of a station, as a stand-alone unit, or incorporated into existing LNG systems and upgraded to legal public access custody transfer.

“Combining speed, reliability and accurate repeatability for measuring the small volumes used to fuel vehicles is a unique challenge in cryogenic science. Chart’s dispenser is the culmination of years of metering and dispensing designs and has resulted in several U.S. patents. We are pleased to be able to bring weights and measures approved technology to the LNG market where there has been a need for quite some time,” Drube concluded.
