Applications are now being accepted for the 2018-19 Women in Hydropower Mentorship Program, which seeks to connect industry newcomers with veterans for personal and professional growth opportunities.
The program looks to build on its success last year, which saw the creation of 48 mentor/protege pairings across all segments of the hydro industry.
“We knew there was interest within the industry, but we were so excited to receive over 80 applications in 2017,” said Nora Rosemore, a hydro operations superintendent at Minnesota Power.
Rosemore, a 2016 Women with Hydro Vision award recipient, started the program after a similar mentorship program coordinated by the Northwest Hydroelectric Association went defunct.
Now in just the second year of its revived form, the program is looking to expand globally, with support from the International Hydropwoer Association and Canadian Hydropower Association.
Organizors said their hope is that mentors will “bring her life experience and a willingness to listen, give counsel, and provide network connections that support the protege”, while proteges are asked to “bring her growth and development goals, opportunities, and challenges with a willingness to openly discuss them.”
Applications for the 2018-19 Women in Hydropower Mentorship Program will be accepted now through August 1, with pairings to be announced in September.

The Women in Hydropower Mentorship Program is also supported by the National Hydropower Association, Northwest Hydroelectric Association, Midwest Hydro Users Group and PennWell’s HydroVision International conference and exhibition.
Recognizing Women at HydroVision International
Now in its fifth year, PennWell’s Women with Hydro Vision awards program is designed to recognize exemplary women who have made or are continuing to make significant contributions to the hydro industry.
Moreover, many of the award’s past recipients are, like Rosemore, active with the Women in Hydropower Mentorship Program.
Program organizors will provide an update on the 2018-19 mentorship cycle during the Women with Hydro Vision awards luncheon, which is being held in conjunction with HydroVision International 2018.
HydroVision International 2018 takes place in Charlotte, N.C., U.S., from June 26-28, with the Women with Hydro Vision luncheon taking place Wednesday, June 27.
