Wisconsin Power & Light closes on purchase of Riverside Energy Center

Wisconsin Power and Light Co. (WP&L), a unit of Alliant Energy Corp., closed on the purchase of the Riverside Energy Center. Riverside Energy Center was owned by Calpine Corp. at the time it was purchased by WP&L.

The Riverside Energy Center is a 600 MW combined cycle natural gas-fired electric generating facility located in Beloit, Wisconsin. It began operation in 2004 and WPL previously purchased about 500 MW of capacity from the facility.

The purchase price was about $400 million.

WP&L, based in Madison, Wis., provides electric service to about 459,000 customers and natural gas service to about 180,000 customers in more than 600 communities across central and southern Wisconsin. WP&L is a unit of Alliant Energy Corp.

Calpine operates a fleet of 92 power plants, representing more than 27,000 MW of generation capacity.
