(October 6, 2010) — During the summer, SRC announced the formation of its Energy Research Initiative; founding members include ABB, Applied Materials, Bosch, First Solar, IBM, Nexans, and Tokyo Electron. In advance of Solar Power International 2010, Photovoltaics World discussed the initiative with SRC’s EVP, Steve Hillenius.
The initiative marries SRC’s pre-competitive research model together with university research in solar PV, with two major thrusts: PV manufacturing and SmartGrid technology. Member companies not only have access to university research, but to a trained workforce of graduate students. Activities include developing simulation tools, developing the foundation for a roadmap, and a process for implementing a research roadmap.
Other recent research forays into photovoltaics:
- CIGS solar cell research brings thin-film efficiency above 20%
- New research in clean energy storage could bring night-time solar
- Dow Corning, U Toledo collaborate on solar R-and-D
