Upgrade ordered for German pumped-storage plant

Schluchseewerk AG of Germany has awarded a 2.6 million euro (US$3 million) contract to VA Tech Hydro to refurbish a 118-MVa motor-generator at the 1,350-MW Hotzenwald/Unterstufe Sackingen pumped-storage project on the Rhine River.

Work includes renewal of the complete stator and field windings of the Unit A7 motor-generator.

VA Tech Hydro, which was chosen from among four bidders, said the stator is to be assembled at its Weiz, Austria, facility and delivered to the site, keeping unit outage to only 4.5 months. Commissioning of the refurbished unit is set for February 2007.
