Nepal could be getting its first pumped-storage hydropower plants pending the results of a Department of Electricity Development study.
The DoED project report will examine the feasibility of the proposed 1,100-MW Sunkoshi 2 and 536-MW Sunkoshi 3 pumped-storage projects, both of which will be located along Nepal’s Sunkoshi River.
Officials said the projects are primarily intended to help peak hour demands during the country’s winter months.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) recently signed a loan agreement worth about US$9.7 million to help fund the study.
DoED said the projects could be completed as early as 2012, assuming construction were to begin immediately following the report’s completion.
