Our August HYDRO+ free virtual training program will offer three more sessions recorded at HYDROVISION International 2022 in Denver.
On Aug. 16, we will offer the global hydropower and dams industry these three hot topic sessions: The Little Stuff Matters for Small Hydro (from the Operations and Maintenance track), Fish Passage Progress and Innovation (from the Water and Environment track) and New Pumped Storage Hydropower in the U.S. – Why Not? (from the Energy Storage track).
Hydro Review and HYDROVISION International hosts the month HYDRO+ webcast to provide access to free training.
Specific session details are:
Operations and Maintenance: The Little Stuff Matters for Small Hydro, 9 am CT
The challenges of keeping small hydro going with limited revenue opportunities can be daunting. Balancing competing interests is a constant struggle. How do you prioritize dam safety and operations and maintenance and efficiency improvement? If you own small hydro – either as a developer or a large utility – this session is for you!
Our expert speakers for this session are:
- Bryan Leyland, Leyland Consultants Ltd (moderator)
- Marc Thalacker, Three Sisters Irrigation District
- Darvin Fales, Columbia Basin Hydropower
- Amanda Collins, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
Water and Environment: Fish Passage Progress and Innovation, 11 am CT
There is more than one way to pass fish at hydropower dams and other migration barriers. This session takes a look at some of the newer methods beyond ladders, lifts and gates. A nature-like fishway passing multiple species in both directions and a concept for using pump-turbines and penstocks as a fishway.
Our expert speakers for this session are:
- Steve H Arnold, Americas Energy Services (moderator)
- Henry Obermeyer, Obermeyer Hydro Inc
- Sterling Watson, Natel Energy
- Ralph Nelson, HDR Engineering, Inc.
Energy Storage: New Pumped Storage Hydropower in the U.S. – Why Not?, 1 pm CT
Pumped storage hydro efficiently provides important grid-scale benefits to support integration of renewable and intermittent energy sources, but developers are confronted with significant challenges, including high upfront costs and time commitment for engineering, permitting, and construction; long lead times for equipment; and uncertainty in revenue streams. This panel brings together experts to discuss these challenges and what maybe would “move the needle” to make pumped storage more attractive.
Our expert speakers for this session are:
- Dr. Boualem Hadjerioua, Mesa Associates, Inc. (moderator)
- Kirby Gilbert, Stantec
- Norman Bishop, Knight Piesold
- John Pierce, Xcel Energy
- Shannon Bynum, Tennessee Valley Authority
The HYDRO+ monthly series of virtual events brings together the hydro community through live content and an engaging virtual experience for those looking for perspective and discussion on current and future issues affecting the hydroelectric power and dams markets.
Attendees will receive a certificate of attendance after the session is concluded.
In addition, all of the dozens of previously recorded HYDRO+ training sessions are available on demand, to be watched any time. So if these sessions don’t fit your training needs, there are plenty of others that do.
