Generator upgrade ordered for German pumped-storage plant

Schluchseewerk AG of Germany has awarded a contract to Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation to refurbish a 300-MVa motor-generator at the 1,270-MW Hotzenwald pumped-storage complex on the Rhine River.

Work includes renewal of the complete stator, 10 generator poles, and water-cooled coil of the Unit A9 motor-generator of the 910-MW Hotzenwald/Hornbergstufe Wehr plant.

Although the contract price was not announced, Schluchseewerk said it received three bids for the work ranging from 4.5 million euros (US$5.8 million) to 7.4 million euros (US$9.6 million).

In 2006, Schluchseewerk awarded a 2.6 million euro (US$3 million) contract to VA Tech Hydro to refurbish a 118-MVa motor-generator at the Hotzenwald complex’s other plant, 360-MW Hotzenwald/Unterstufe Sackingen. (HNN 2/24/06)
