TERNA S.A. in Greece, construction branch of GEKTERNA Group, awarded ANDRITZ a contract for the supply of electromechanical equipment for the 680 MW Amfilochia Pumped Storage Complex in central Greece.
It is the largest grid energy storage investment in Greece and a milestone project for the country’s clean energy transition, according to a release. Once in commercial operation, the power plant will have a total installed capacity of 680 MW (generation) and 730 MW (pumping), with estimated total production of about 816 GWh of clean and sustainable electricity per year.
The pumped storage plant will act as a green battery by balancing fluctuations in generation from wind and solar plants, thus ensuring the secure and stable operation of the Greek power grid.
The ANDRITZ scope of supply for this project includes the design, manufacture, supervision of erection and commissioning of six reversible pump-turbine generator units, along with associated auxiliaries and ancillary equipment, governors, excitation and protection system, main inlet valves and draft tube gates, as well as digital services.
ANDRITZ offers plants, equipment, systems and services for the pulp and paper industry, the hydropower sector, the metals processing and forming industry, pumps, solid/liquid separation in the municipal and industrial sectors, as well as animal feed and biomass pelleting. ANDRITZ Hydro supplies electromechanical equipment and services for hydropower plants, with an installed fleet of more than 470 GW.
