Powerpack Selected for Victoria’s First Utility-Scale Solar+Storage Project

The government of Victoria, Australia, has chosen a Tesla Powerpack for integration with a 50-MW solar farm recently placed into commercial operation in the state.

The 25-MW/50MWh Gannawarra Energy Storage System (GESS) was selected under the Victorian government’s Energy Storage Initiative to support grid reliability in the North West region of Victoria, according to Australian renewable energy company Edify Energy and Wirsol Energy, which completed a joint financing for the storage project.

“We are very proud to have designed and financed the first combined utility-scale solar and storage facility in Victoria,” Edify Energy CEO John Cole said in a statement. “It is unprecedented in Australia at this scale and is among the largest in the world.”

Edify Energy said that the financing of the GESS is supported by a long-term commercial services agreement with Melbourne-based utility EnergyAustralia, which is the offtaker of the 50-MW Gannawarra solar farm.

The Victorian government earlier this year completed an agreement that supports the development of a wind power plus energy storage facility for a crop farm in Western Victoria.
