[RenewableEnergyAccess.com] Electric vehicle manufacturer Zero Air Pollution (ZAP) has cleared the final emissions and safety regulatory hurdles to gain the authorization to sell the Smart Car, manufactured by Smart-Automobile, in 45 states in the U.S. ZAP CEO Steve Schneider formally handed the keys to of the first Americanized Smart Car to the Mayor of Santa Ana, California Miguel Pulido at City Hall, who then took the coupe on a celebratory test drive to the Smart Car conversion facility three miles away. ZAP stated that the company has received more than $750 million in orders from American dealers. Smart Cars are described by the ZAP as high-efficiency gas powered vehicles. Mercedes is currently the exclusive importer and distributor for Smart Cars in the U.S.
