May 6, 2003 [SolarAccess.com] Medis Technologies Ltd. and General Dynamics C4 Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics, have signed an agreement for Medis to design and develop a pre-production prototype of Medis’ fuel cell Power Pack for the personal digital assistant (PDA) system that General Dynamics is developing for the military. Medis Technologies is developing fuel cells that increase power density and achieve the small size configurations required for portable electronic devices as an alternative to conventional batteries/power supplies. The company’s direct liquid fuel cell differs from other liquid fuel cells currently in development in that it uses a liquid electrolyte instead of a solid polymer membrane and a proprietary fuel containing glycerol instead of methanol. This offers significant advantages, including increased power relative to size and weight, longer operating time before refueling, increased safety and lower production costs, according to Medis.
