Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said this week he plans for the city to end its use of coal-fired power entirely within 12 years, according to reports.
Villaraigosa, speaking at an event sponsored by UCLA’s Institute of the Environment and Sustainability, said he intends to sign agreements within a few weeks to “get completely out of coal by 2025.”
About 39 percent of Los Angeles’s power comes from the 2,250 MW Navajo Generating Station in Arizona and the Intermountain Power Plant in Utah. Villaraigosa said at the event the city will stop using power from the Navajo Generating Station in 2015 and the 1,900 MW Intermountain Power Plant in 2025.
